DEFINE

I researched a variety of ways to best showcase an artist’s work by looking into art galleries/exhibits and the way they display artwork. However, there were little to no platforms that achieved that successfully digitally.

THE PROBLEM

Presenting an artist’s work digitally does not showcase the artist and their style properly.

I’ve found museum/exhibit platforms to be overly minimalistic and simplistic, eventually removing the artist’s style and their art’s effect.

USER NEEDS

  • Artwork organized based on the artist’s biography and story

  • Interface that represents the artist’s style and dramatizes the impact of their art pieces.

  • Biography

  • Engaging feel of visiting an art gallery, going from room to room

THE SOLUTION

A digital art gallery showcasing the artist’s story and style.

Yayoi Kusama’s signature style is polka dots. She also is famous for her infinity rooms displaying a repetitive pattern in a room. By combining these 2 key concepts that are specific to Kusama, the web app will have an engagiong and inspiring experience that fully represents the artist.

WIREFRAMES

To come up with the best solution, I researched art galleries, Kusama’s biography and art, as well as museums and her famous “infinity rooms” in order to come up with the following wireframes:

PROTOTYPE

HIGH-FIDELITY SCREENS

The user is first directed to the ticketing page where the user inputs their information to get a virtual ticket and enter the gallery.

Ticketing

They are then directed to a room that represents a certain part of Kusama’s life. This is where all the art pieces from that time are displayed.

The colors of the polka dots change in every room, representing Kusama’s signature style.

Room

The user can click on the art piece and view it from all angles. They can also learn more about it through the description, art form, and location buttons.

TEST

FUTURE DIRECTION

If I had more time, I would have conducted rigorous user research through focus groups, observations, and comparative analysis in order to gather valuable insights. I would have also performed usability tests to get feedback on the designs and optimize the flow.

REFLECTIONS

As a big fan of Kusama, I found working on this piece to be an incredibly fulfilling experience that satisfied my creative appetite while exploring innovative ways to present her art and life story. I also practiced how to effectively integrate an individual's personality and branding into a website in a unique and engaging way.
