  • CONTEXT

Resultid is a data intelligence platform that transforms data that is buried in spreadsheets, slide decks, documents, and more into information that is easily summarized, understood, and put into action.

  • MY ROLE

    Lead Product Designer

This is my capstone project at Tufts University.

I was part of a team consisting of 6 individuals for a duration of 6 months. We worked very closely with the founders and product team.

EMPATHIZE

We dived into researching AI in the education field and got valuable insights from over 200 college students to better capture student pain points and their perception of AI as a tool.

COMPETITIVE ANALYSIS

We identified over 13 key players in the AI-education space and studied their features, strengths, and weaknesses.

DEFINE

FINDINGS

The majority of college students are interested in using an AI tool that provides an innovative way to aid and interact with course material.

Students primarily desire ways to help them with time-management or ways to engage with course material in order to understand deeper.

Students also expressed concerns about ethical issues and do not want to shortcut their education.

THE PROBLEM

AI is being used unethically in academia, as a shortcut to university students’ education

The rapid advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), and Natural Language Processing (NLP) is fundamentally changing how we work, learn, and live. Academically, AI is being used to do the student’s work instead of serving as a tool to enhance their learning, which encourages cheating and lower true academic performance.

USER NEEDS

  • Time-saving features to optimize the studying process

  • A function to summarize readings and/or make them more digestible

  • A function to facilitate the writing process via outlining based on source materials (e.g., readings)

  • A function to enhance notes by suggesting new supporting information

  • Some means of organizing materials and workflows (e.g., folders)

  • A system that honors the student’s learning process and academic integrity

  • Trust that the AI is reliable

THE SOLUTION

Design a web app extension to Resultid’s existing website that allows students to:

  • Summarize readings

  • Enhance notes

  • Use an AI tool that aids with their academics in an ethical manner

  • See the input and output of the tool to ensure trust in the tool

IDEATE

WIREFRAMES

To come up with the best solution, we combined all the user needs and feedback/insights to visualize specific features.

We came up with 2 different concepts and conducted 10 A/B tests of mid-fidelity wireframes to eventually end up with the following wireframes:

PROTOTYPE

HIGH-FIDELITY SCREENS

The Dashboard includes a variety of workflows, but based on our research findings, we focused on the 3 most needed ones:

  1. Reading Assistant

  2. Essay Outline

  3. Enhance Notes

Dashboard

READING ASSISTANT

The Reading Assistant is targeted at students who have classes that require a lot of reading materials (e.g. long articles, books, research papers). The student has to answer some questions to provide the AI technology with enough context for the best performance and most accurate outcome.

They can then upload the documents they want to summarize.

Reading Assitant - Input

The tool outputs the summary to the right and the input is displayed on the left side to help the user gain trust in the technology and check if need be.

The user can then choose to summarize the entire reading or just a specific excerpt.

The student can also choose to get an explanation for the selected section too.

ENHANCE NOTES

The Enhance Notes tool is targeted at students who want to organize their notes and combine them with other class material (e.g. lecture slides, readings).

The user also has to answer a few questions for context and upload their documents.

Enhance Notes - Input

The tool outputs the organized notes on the right panel. They can then choose to organize the output in a paragraph form or a bullet point form.

The student can also enhance their notes further by clicking on the Enhance button. They will then be able to approve or reject suggestions that provide further explanations or information to their notes.

ESSAY OUTLINE

The Essay Outline tool targets users who are writing an essay and have a bunch of ideas and references but do not know how to organize them.

The student uploads their documents and answers a few context questions.

Essay Outline - Input

The tool outputs an organized outline on the right side with specific key quotes and explanations extracted from the inputted documents.

The user is able to locate exactly where the quote was taken from in order to read more and gain better contextual information.

TEST

USABILITY TEST

We conducted a total of 8 usability tests with students from a variety of universities, using the prototyped web app.

FEEDBACK

  • The tool fits college students’ academic needs

  • The tool upholds academic integrity

  • The tool is easy to use and tasks were completed in a timely fashion

  • The layouts of each tool were comfortable for each user to navigate through

REFLECTIONS

It was really interesting to work with an AI product because there are so many things to consider: people’s trust in AI, the limitations of the technology, and ethical concerns that come into play. I really enjoyed solving this problem and actually addressing each of those concerns to end up with a unique solution.

As AI continues to grow, schools will need tools that leverage AI to support student learning while safeguarding academic integrity and privacy. The impact that it will have on academia is yet to be discovered and I’m really grateful I got the opportunity to work on such a cool project.

That’s the end of this project.
